Suggest Treatment For Cold With Nose And Chest Congestion In A Child

Hi Doctor, My daughter is 14 months old and has cold since two days. I am giving her Relent syrup as her chest is also congested as this is what her doctor had suggested last time when she had a cold. Even after this her nose is blocked and chest is heavily congested. I am not what do I give her to make her feel better. She does not have fever. She is unable to sleep because of the cold. Can you please suggest a medicine that I can give her to make her feel better? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If your doctor has no fever and is active and playful it is very likely she is going through a viral infection and most are self limiting and the only treatment needed in most cases is symptom relieve. If you feel that the "cold" syrup is not helping and you have tried if for 2-3 days than you can stop it.
Make sure you give her plenty of water to drink, use nasal saline solution (Not few drops but like lavage) to help with the nose secretion and try to aspirate the nasal secretions by a balloon. Nasal saline solution can be applied every few hours. You can also apply some strong mint gelly on her chest at night so it evaporates and opens the nostrils (vicks gel is good to be applied on the chest) and also some honey tea before sleep is good also.
If no improvement or your child is not active and playful or whaterver concerns you. she will need to be seen by a doctor to make sure her lungs are clear.
Hope this answers to your question and is helpful for you.
