Suggest Treatment For Compression Fracture (L2-L5)

Last year in may I had a compression fracture (L2-L5)and after a X-ray on April 30/2015 still shows L-5 not healed and I have to have a MRI,I wonder when and what are my chances to return to my work( house painter) which require lots of bending, climbing, lifting.I tried but I am going trough lots of pain. There is a time frame the doctor can predict that the painting job is not for me anymore or I just go on only light and just few hours. Thank you

Hi,

Lumbar compression fracture occurs due to:
1) Trauma
2) Old age
3) Severe osteoporosis
4) Vertebral tumors
5) Spontaneous

Treatment consists of medical and surgical management. Only if medical management fails to give pain relief and if significant nerve involvement is present and clinical instability, surgical management is done. The following are the various treatment options:
1) Physical therapy
2) Pain medication like NSAIDs like ibuprofen, opioids like Hydrocodone, Morphine etc.
3) Muscle relaxants
4) Complete bed rest
5) Heat or cold compression
6) Bracing for comfort though it doesn't help much in vertebral stability

If all the above methods fail, the following are recommended:
1) Epidural steroid injection
2) Intercostal nerve blocks
3) Surgical decompression
4) Kyphoplasty: a balloon is injected into vertebral body to compensate the height and cement is injected to reduce the pain
5) Vertebroplasty: cement is injected into the vertebral body.

Please do consult your neuro-physician and ask about the above mentioned procedures. They would be helpful to you to and would reduce pain and allow you to resume your profession.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
