My two year old son was involved in a car accident about 3 weeks ago driver of the car he was in was going 35. Another car ran a stop sign and was going between 40-45 and never hit the brakes until the cars made contact. The car my son was in went 20ft before being stopped by trees. He had a concussion. Today babysitter called and said he was screaming in pain took him to the er found out he had a hernia could there be a connection.

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Your son is suffering from "hernia". You have not mentioned the site like inguinal, abdominal, lumbar. I assume it to be inguinal as it is the most common site.

You want to know its relation with accident. It is not directly related to accident. But there is a possibility that your son might be having small, reducible hernia before accident, but during accident, due to raised abdominal pressure, it became large and symptomatic. Raised pressure can occur due to screaming, some object pressing over abdomen, direct hit on abdomen.

For concussion, you need not to worry. Its symptoms will resolve in few weeks. Your son can follow few steps

- Take rest

- Give him painkiller like diclofenac after proper prescription.

- For vertigo, you can give him tablet betahistin after proper prescription.

- Apply icepacks at injury site.

Hope it will clear your doubts. If still in doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
