Suggest Treatment For Congestion, Difficulty Breathing And Lack Of Appetite

Good day. I was reading the advise given previously to other requesters and was very impressed by the responses. Please could you assist me. I have a 2 year 7 month old daughter. 2 days ago she suddenly got a high temp of about 38.9 degree Celsius. Other symptoms were congestion, runny nose, difficulty breathing, slight cough, vomiting, tiredness and lack of appetite. I treated her with corenza for children. No improvement noted. By the afternoon her temperature rose to 40 degrees Celsius. I took her to our gp who put her on augmentin, tylinex linctus for children, dimetapp, and ponstan. He had told me that my daughter had phlegm in her chest, she also had a post nasal drip and her throat was red and inflamed. I administered the drugs to my daughter and she seemed to b getting better after about 8 hours. However on the second day she seems to be getting worse. Her temp is elevating and she is not breathing well. Her appetite has also not improved and she was tired most of the day. I am jot sure what could be wrong with her and I am worried that she might have pneumonia. I have read that sometimes children can contract both viral and bacterial. Please help Sincerely Worried mum

Hello,

As a mom to a 7 year old daughter, i can understand your distress and anguish. The most probable causes of your child's condition are:
1) Acute bacterial rhinosinusitis
2) Pneumonia
3) Influenza
4) Tracheobronchitis

Please don't panic by the above list as all of them are completely curable. As you had already consulted a GP and started medication, but the child is worsening, I suggest you to revisit the GP such that he can check for symptoms and signs of pneumonia and may change or increase the dose of medication. Or you can observe for one more day taking medications.

The following are recommended
1) Warm water with salt gargling once or twice daily
2) Steam inhalation once or twice daily
3) Luke warm water for drinking
4) Removal of any allergic factor responsible if any

So, just observe for one more day and if it worsens , immediately take her to your GP.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
