I have seasonal allergies. Particularly when grasses and trees bud in the spring into early summer. Then again in the fall as I live in central Nebraska where harvesting dust & ragweed, etc. flourish Each time of these two seasonal episodes, I begin to have a light cough & drainage developing into constant coughing at night when prone (drainage down the throat), can't sleep, get exhausted, and it goes on for days/nights.
I have begun to regulate the severity of the allergic symptoms by beginning to take Loratadine 10 mg tablets beginning in February through May each year....and then again in August through November in the fall, which helps quite a bit to regulate it. I have been given Montelukast 10mg and benzonatate 100mg tablets to help control the cough, I guess. I also use a sinus rinse (NeilMEd) when outside a good period of time. All these I take each day. My question is I don't seem to be able to stop the mucus from forming and continuing to be coughed up. Also, trouble distinguishing this all from a cold and treating it as such....do I take cough syrup with this all (as I have done), should I take drying up agents with these other meds? How can I solve this irritable allergy/cold development problem....and know what to take? I am 78 years old, am in otherwise excellent health, and have been battling these episodes yearly for up to 8-10 years. thanks for your help.
