Suggest Treatment For Constipation In An Elderly Person

Hi, I am 76 and have acute constipation. Sometimes I may go 3/4 days without and always have to rely on stool softners or laxative to remedy my situation then start all over again. I am on 8 different medications for hypertension through enlarged prostate . I am told age and the medications are part of the problem. I need to find a way to manage it and want to know what tests are available to help understand whats going on in my guts. Thanks in advance. Kenneth Gaisie

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

If the symptoms persist despite using stool softeners, a colonoscopy is required to rule out possible causes like tumor or structure in the bowel.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
