Hello,

Metronidazole is usually given for 10 days. Although it's not the most effective treatment and there is an almost 25% risk of recurrence it seems that things are going well for you. A 10 day course should be completed to reduce the risk of recurrence unless serious side effects occur.

I don't know and cannot guess the importance of antibiotic treatment in your case. Your doctor knows how the diagnosis was found and whether it's absolutely necessary to finish the treatment or not. For example if the diagnosis of colitis was only presumptive then your doctor may consider stopping the treatment. If you did have objective findings like evidence from a colonoscopy or the presence of toxins in the stool then the treatment would have to be completed even if you had to switch to another regimen.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Regards,
