Suggest Treatment For Constipation

Hi. I am 56 years old and have Hashimoto Syndrom. I have been struggling with constipation for a couple of years. I have had a colonoscopy 7 years ago and can not get another for 3 more years due to not having polyps. With that said, I feel as though the food I eat does not get passed my large intestine. Therefore, there is discomfort through the rest of the digestive track and I am producing hard and small stools. I have been keeping a journal of the meals I eat for the past month. I eat prunes, yogurt, vegetables, bran. But, to no avail.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think that Hashimoto's disease is the cause of your constipation. Without enough thyroid hormone, many of the body's functions slow down. Hypothyroidism slows the action of the digestive tract causing constipation. I suggest to drink plenty of fluids, exercise, eat food rich in fiber.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Blerina Pasho, General & Family Physician
