Suggest Treatment For Contusion And Swelling In Thigh After Injury
Hit in thigh with a hard hit softball playing shortsop. Have a 3-4 in diam contusion which stared swelling immediately after the injury--onset approx 24 hrs ago. Applied ace wrap, am elevating leg, applying ice packs regularly and taking ibuprofen q8hrs since being hit. Movement and wt bearing on injured leg is limited and painful. When can I start more vigorous activity like running, standing, etc. and for how long? When should I really push it? YYYY@YYYY
Probably you have developed a contusion there. Treatment needed is exactly what you are doing already- icing, bed rest and analgesics.
But, if the pain and swelling does not come down after 48-72 hours of this treatment, we may need to take an ultrasound to look for any large hematoma (blood collection), that might need to be drained, albeit very rarely. For this, your doctor will guide
If things are getting fine, you can resume activity after 3-5 days of disappearing the pain and no more swelling.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
