Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 4year old son has asthma, he gets controller twice a day and reliever three times a day. However there are times when he will just start coughing around 2am and his reliever won t help. Last night we also put him on nebulizer but he has been coughing since 2am, we gave him reliever and its now 2:53am.... Only now his breathing is getting better and the coughing has subsided. What triggers the coughing at night?
Your child's cough with asthma could be due to upper respiratory infection or asthmatic bronchitis etc but it must be evaluated further to find out the underlying cause of triggering the coughing symptoms during night time.
You should take advise from pediatrician rather than giving him just symptomatic treatment by self medication like asthma reliever nebulizer or medicines.
Your child will require oral antibiotics with antipyretics, antihistamines in syrup formulations.
Now,if he has been diagnosed with asthma already then he would require bronchodilators like beta agonists and anticholinergics in MDI with spacer as child cannot synchronize himself.
In addition, antihistamines and mast cell stabilizers are also have a useful in the treatment of asthma but for all this treatment you must see pediatrician rather than giving him just self treatment.
