Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Garhett is 16. He is a runner, and very healthy normally. 18 days ago he got a sore throat and cough with normal flu symptoms. After 18 days he still has extreme shortness of breath, with pain when he tries to run (tries to take a deep breath), and a lot of coughing if he tries to run. The family doctor says this is normal...Is that true?
Your 16 year old is suffering from sore throat and cough. He is having pain and shortness of breath when he tries to run. You are suggested to get him clinically examined by a GP, since it is 18 days and his symptoms are not improving he should get thoroughly investigated as it can be indicative of asthma, bronchitis, chest infection, pneumonia, COPD, etc.
He should get the required blood tests, imaging tests (X-ray, CT, MRI) done. His treatment will depend on the pathology detected and the severity of the symptoms. He should stay away from addictions if any. He should presently, avoid running till he is being treated. Give him home made nutritious food, let him stay at rest and stress-free. He should avoid staying in closed areas where pollution is high.
In the meantime he can take non sedating antihistamine, one stat when needed for relieve. He should take sips of water throughout the day so the the mucosa of the throat is not dry. Give him liquid food or semi solid food so that the throat is not hurt. Cough syrups may be helpful. He should gargle with warm salt water 2-3 times a day.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
