Suggest Treatment For Cough And Soreness In Mouth

I got sick while on a cruise to Mexico, first symptoms were coughing and then severe laryngitis for a couple days, then fever started, no appetite. Got home cough and fever got worse. Urgent care doctor said some wheezing, xrayed chest for pneumonia, none, and decided it was not flu either but bronchial infection. He prescribed Doxycillin 20 capsules over 10 days, albuterol, and codeine cough medicine, and when I got rash, he added Benadryl and that helped the rash. I've been off the Rx's for about a week, and my appetite is back but the cough is not as bad but it still there most of the time. My mouth is dry and lips a little cracked and my tongue is inflamed and very sensitive to mouthwash. Anything more I should do?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain it seems that you have got a side effect to medications that you took recently leading to Xerostomia or Dry mouth and also inflammation of the mucosa inside mouth known Apthous Stomatitis and chapped lips..
Nothing to worry as the conditions will resolve..
You can start chewing sugarfree chewing gums as it will help in stimulation of saliva flow, gargle with specialized mouthwash formulated for dry mouth condition like Biotene..
You can also instil artificial saliva drops and drink plenty of water.
For apthous stomatitis you can gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine, take multivitamins daily, suck ice pops and avoid spicy foods..
Maintain a good oral hygiene..
For dry lips apply emollients like Petroleum jelly or bees wax containing lip balm frequently throughout the day as it will lock moisture and avoid drying of lips..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
