Suggest Treatment For Cough In 5 Year Kid
I have a five year old boy who is suffering from a cough. His doctor today did not prescribe anything for him except for his ear infections. Oddly they seem to forgot to call in those meds! Anyway, his cough is more due to the mucus from his allergys. Post nasal drip is what they think is causing it. I wanted to know if I can give him some Nyquil Cough. This is the Nyquil that is only for a cough and only has Dextromethorphan HBr 15mg - Cough suppresent and Doxylamine succinate 6,25 mg - Antihistamine. If I can how much. I figure with his body weight and age he should be ok with about 3/4 of a teaspoon, but if I was 100% sure I wouldn't be here asking. Any info is appreciated.

Hello. Thank you for your question. If the problem is cough due to post nasal drip, a better option might be a long acting antihistamine. Examples are Zyrtec (Cetirizine) or Claritin (Loratidine). You can try one or the other, but not both at the same time. Each is given ince per day and lasts 24 hours. The dosage is one teaspoon for either.
