Suggest Treatment For Cough With Breathing Difficulties

Hi Doctor, I have a difficulty breathing and I cough a lot. Occassionaly I cough up little bit of clear mucus. I do not cough at night or when I wake up. I have history of asthma when I was a child but that was long time ago. This has been happening for a month now. I am taking steroid asthma puffer and steroid nosal drops but there have been no changes in my condition. I live in Toronto Canada. I recently visited Hawaii and I did not cough there. What could be the issue? I am pregnant as well but this started before my pregnancy. Thank you, Sylvia

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems that you have allergic bronchitis. Air pollutants, chemical fumes, dust and dander are common causes. The respiratory tract is sensitive to some allergens and as it comes in contact with them, there are symptoms like cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and dizziness.

Kindly visit a respiratory medicine expert who may go for your eosinophil count, chest x-ray, lung function test and sputum examination. Steroids are the mainstay and used to treat allergic bronchitis. Steroids decrease inflammation in the bronchi. This action reduces coughing and may help air-flow in the lungs. Bronchodilator drugs relax muscles around the airways to open them up. Humidifiers, intermittent nebulization and oxygen therapy, preventive vaccination and pulmonary rehabilitation have a crucial role too.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
