Suggest Treatment For Cramping, tingling And Pain In Feet, legs And Hands

I am at a point of desperation following a total thyroidectomy and loss of parathyroids. Keeping calcium at a level to stop the cramping , tingling and pain in my feet, legs and hands is impossible. At present I have to take 20+ x 600 mg. of calcium. My life is not worth living. I cannot manage the hormone medication other than tolerate 50 micrograms of Oroxine. as my blood pressure is becoming quite high. Is there just one level of hormone that everyone survives on or can I just be OK as per the dose above. I feel fine on just that small amount.

Hi Dear,

You havent mentioned your weight. If you had total thyroidectomy, the 50 mcg dose of Thyroxine may not be sufficient. And if you have lost your parathyroids during surgery, taking calcium alone will not normalize your blood calcium level. You need to take activated Vitamin D along with calcium ( Calcitriol or 1,25 hydroxy vit D or alphacalcidol) for normalizing blood calcim level. This is because, in the absence of parathyroid hormone, calcium will not be absorbed from stomach or kidneys efficiently.

Meet your endocrinologist.
