My 8 year old has a croupy cough which comes out mor ein morning and night and when she is running around so we have restricted activity. She has no fever or other symptoms. She has been on a steroid now twice a day since Saturday. She went to school today but the cough sounds even worse now. I also have been givign her abuterol inhaler twice a day as well. My younger daughter had bronchitis last week. Wondering if she needs a nebulizer. Her breathing though seems fine. I would have thought the abuterol would have done the trick and this is day three of the meds. Help!
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Croupy cough is mostly a viral infection which is common in children. it will normally run its course for 7-14 days. Follow the below set of instructions and this may alleviate the problem:
Make sure that your child is hydrated and have lots of rest. Don't give any type of cold foods, drinks, use a humidifier at night in your child's room and make your child to inhale from hot water vaporizer as often as possible, salt water gargle every morning. This is contagious so make sure to protect other children. If these symptoms persist after 2 weeks make sure to consult your local doctor as negligence of this may lead to asthma or severe pneumonia.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
