Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
I will keep a possibility of acute paronychia i.e bacterial infection of the nail folds. Pain, swelling and discharge indicative of that. The infection must have got in through minor unnoticed trauma of the cuticle or nail folds. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a course of an Oral antibiotic for a week. My choice of Oral antibiotic would be either cephalexin or flucloxacillin for a week. An OTC Pain killer e.g ibuprofen would provide symptomatic relief from pain and swelling. Topically you may use an OTC topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily for a week. If the pain and swelling continue to increase it would be better to drain away the pus and that would hasten the healing along with Oral antibiotics.
