A few weeks ago I got an ultrasound done and they found a cist on my ovary. About a week later I seen my gyno and he asked if I was on my period or have been recently because my uterus was larger. Well I haven t had a period at all this month. Could that mean I am pregnant?

Hi,

Though enlarged uterus is seen in pregnancy, it alone is not confirmatory to pregnancy, as a bulky uterus can be seen in other conditions like:

-In parous women.
-Premenstrual condition
-Uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, etc.

So, if you are having doubt regarding pregnancy, please go for a urine pregnancy test once.

This will help in ruling out the possibility of pregnancy. If the test gives a negative result, you can wait and may get periods soon.

If the test gives a positive result, if the cyst in ovary persists with empty enlarged uterus, you have to rule out ectopic pregnancy.

Monitoring serum beta HCG levels in a 48 hour period will help in distinguishing between ectopic and intrauterine pregnancy in early gestation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri SR
