Suggest Treatment For Degenerative Disk Disease

What is best way to treat degenerative disk disease? There is sciatic nerve involvement with long history of sciatic referred pain and neuropathy in right leg/hip area. I m 74 yo female and have always been active; want to remain that way! Have been through Pain Management program before with unsuccessful epidural. Lack of sleep led me to Aquatic Therapy at Brooks (current). Is surgery best option? If so, what is out there for help. An MRI was done recently, but all I m told is DDD. I know it s the L4-L5 area from an old auto accident. Is there help at my age?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Treatment may include occupational therapy, physical therapy, or both, special exercises, medications, losing weight, and surgery.

Medical options include injecting the joints next to the damaged disc with steroids and a local anesthetic. These are called facet joint injections. They can provide effective pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
