Suggest Treatment For Delusional Behavior And Phobia For Developing Diseases
My sister is delusional and when she drinks it becomes horrible. She won t go to a doctor because she thinks no doctor knows what they are talking about. She has a cleaning problem. For instance she thinks she gets the flu from trash cans at work or the carpet in her car or from using a hand towel more than once. Resulting in all of my beautiful rose colors towels having bleach spots all over them and the carpet in her car was bleached and then completely torn out and she mops the floors about 4X per day with bleach. She went to the zoo and saw that a giraffe had defecated and went home because she got the flu from it. She thinks that she and I developed myopia because we were hit in the head when we were children, (not true-the hitting), she covers with many blankets at night but has to wash them all every day. She thinks the computers at work are talking to her. She thinks everyday all of her fellow employees have a secret word that she doesn t know, and they each say it and she finally figures it out. I don t know how to help her but she is 59 and seems to be getting worse. I m pretty sure she has virtually suffered from this since she was a teenager. She is twice divorced, short marriages. Maybe I just need to vent because now I can t imagine how anyone can help if she doesn t want help. I love her but can t be around her for very long anymore.
It is understandable to need to vent. As you stated, unless she has insight into her illness and its effects and wants treatment, it would be difficult for her to improve unless she is harmful to herself or anyone else. A family/friend intervention may help give her insight, you can consider this option.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
