Suggest Treatment For Dementia In An Elderly Person

My mother in law within the last month has completely lost her memory. She has stuggled within the last year or so with remembering her grandchildren names, etc. Her mother had a significant stroke at about 90 and was hospitalized in France until her death. My mother in law recently tried to attend her grand daughters graduation from high school and spent the night with her daughter and she was very disoriented and swore she had never been in her home. The day of graduation she was brought to our daughters school and she cried that she was attending her own funeral. She is 93 and the last year has been very difficult for the family - what, if anything, can we do to help her? She and her husband live alone because she has said she would not leave her home but we are concerned that this isn t safe. Please provide some direction

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The most likely reason for dementia is post stroke changes with age related cerebral atrophy. Though there are no promising result oriented medications to cure the condition, supportive role of vitamins (B 12 and folic acid), trace elements as zinc, magnesium and copper must be exercised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
