Hello,

Your 16 year old daughter is at a age where kids enjoy their lives with friends, at school and at home. Constant crying, not having interest in studies, not sleeping and eating well point out to depression. However, many teenagers are moody and present with these symptoms due to moodiness only. So differentiating between moodiness and depression is very difficult thorough online chatting. A professional has to see her, talk with her and then he/she can decide whether your daughter is suffering from depression or is just moody.

It is not unusual for a teenager to have depression. Statistics say that 20% teenagers have depression and 70% out of them improve through therapy.

Keep in mind that feeling depressed is not your daughter's fault. Depression sometimes run in families. Some hormonal imbalance can also cause a person to feel depressed without any apparent reason. Counseling sessions with professional and medicines can help her and you through the situation. Scolding her or forcing her to do things will not do any good. Instead, it can worsen the situation.

What she needs most at this time is your love and support. Take her out of the shell with patience, understanding and love. Do things with her that she loves to do, talk with her with compassion and she may tell you if something is bothering her, take her out for walks, take her to places that she loves to go to. But first of all, take her to a professional psychiatrist and figure out what is the problem and start treatment. She will be fine and will start to enjoy life again.

I hope this information helps. Thank you choosing HealthCareMagic for guidance. I wish your feels better soon.

Best regards,
Dr. Viraj Shah
