Dear User,
If I were to treat a patient with similar complaints, I would like to know some more details as follows:
1. Duration of symptoms
2. Previous history of similar symptoms of opposite symptoms like being over cheerful, overactive, increased confidence than normal, etc, so as to decide among the two diagnostic possibilities- Bipolar depression Vs Unipolar depression.
And going by you description about your patient first possibility would be a major depressive episode which in my clinic, I prefer to treat it with drugs like Tab. Escitalopram 10-20 mg/day. I call them after 3 weeks to see the effect of medication. You might take your friend to a psychiatrist and discuss about this.
