For the past few years, I have experienced major episodes of depression. Then I will be OK for a time. Then back to depression, racing thoughts, insomnia, uncontrolled crying jags. Anti-depressants don t seem to help. This past weekend I have been awake since Friday -it is now early Monday morning and although I am exhausted I cannot sleep. Help please.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you are depressed, give yourself time to get through it. Do any positive thing that makes you feel better. Get connected to a GP / Psychiatrist to get medical support that will aid to recover faster. Antidepressants & anti anxiety medicines work well but once you feel better do not depend on them. Avoid addictions if any. Your symptoms are of moderate depression, change location of your stay & get active in your day to day life.

Physical therapy is quite effective. Take interpersonal therapy, behavioral therapy & psycho dynamic therapy under an expert. Take adequate sleep, start new projects, ignore negative thoughts & eat healthy food. To get good sleep cut on alcohol, caffeine, nicotine or addictions if any. Exercise regularly & avoid sleeping in daytime. Relaxation techniques & good posture while sitting or standing helps in getting better sleep.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
