Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter has been bleeding for the past 3 weeks. A doctor has prescribed Norethristerone. She is 27, petite, a self-harmer,underweight, doesnt eat because she spends her money on other "habits". She has "lost the plot" on various occasions, enough that she has lost her 3 children to the ex partner. She is depressed more than 50% of the time. We cant be beside her 24/7 unfortunately... What will this drug do and what may the side effects consist of please?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Norethisterone is a hormonal drug that can help to reduce the bleeding she is having. It is a progesterone drug and is used commonly in OCPs and sometimes alone to control excess bleeding. The drug is safe to use and is free of serious side effects. She is also having symptoms like low weight, poor appetite, her bad habits, depression etc which should be given attention. For depression I would advise you to take her to a psychiatrist for treatment.
SSRI medicines like Sertraline, Paroxetine, Fluoxetine etc can help to reduce her symptoms and she would feel better in mood. Please consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.
Hope this helps you. Thanks and Take care
