Suggest Treatment For Diabetes And Chronic Kidney Stones
My husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years ago. He is 53 years old. He takes his diabetes meds faithfully (metformin/glipizide). He also suffers from chronic kidney stones per CT Scan (currently has 3 small stones). Today s problem began 2 days ago. He woke to an extremely painful, swollen 2nd toe on his left foot. Pain is so severe he cannot tolerate anything to touch it. We were thinking perhaps it was gout, as he has suffered from gout about a year ago. He has Allopurinol script but does not take it daily because of the side effects. Could this be gout, and what can we do at home to help relieve the pain? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Vernie Attaway YYYY@YYYY
History of gout is present so the likely cause of swollen toe is gout. Has he stopped medications after consulting the doctor? If yes, then he shouldn’t have. If he observes severe adverse effects of the drug then an alternative can be suggested by your doctor. I would suggest, get his blood profile done for uric acid levels as well as blood sugar and visit your doctor. Depending on the results he will guide you with proper management. For the kidney stones if they are small, I suggest drinking adequate water daily will work on flushing those out, if the size is big then depending on the size further management is advised.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
