Hi,
Doxycycline is a great antibiotic and works well for most types of infections, but I have to say it can have a number of "not so good" side effects. It can change the bacterial flora of the intestines and produce what they call antibiotic-associated
diarrhea, which I suspect is the case here. This also has the effect of producing a lot of excess stomach acid and can really cause the
heartburn symptoms to act up.
There is an issue of more severe diarrhea called C. Difficile infection, although it is not that common to see with this antibiotic. If you are noticing a
fever or really if the diarrhea is NON-STOP then that usually warrants a closer look with your family doctor to exclude this type of infection. Some thoughts you can do for now, taking over the counter
IMODIUM 2mg every 4-6 hours is helps and even adding in FIBERCON tablets- 1-2 tablets every 12 hours will help to slow the diarrhea and "bulk up" the stool.
This is really one good option to consider of course be sure to maintain hydration, that is key for right now. I also do recommend taking some PROBIOTICS as well, over the counter ones work fine to help restore the normal bacteria in the intestines. Using
PEPCID or
PRILOSEC for the heartburn symptoms for the time being is also very helpful.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
