Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Blood In Stool

MY AUNT JUST CALLED ME AND SHE IS 83 AND ON INSULIN. SHE HAS BEEN COMPLAINING OF DIARRHEA ALL DAY AND SHE NOTICED SOME BLOOD IN HER STOOL. SHE SAID THE DIARRHEA WAS A CLEAR GOO AND NOW THERE IS A LITTLE MORE SUBSTANCE. SHE DOESN T WANT TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL AND WANTS TO WAIT FOR TOMORROW TO GO TO THE WALKIN CLINIC. SHE HAS BEEN DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER BUT IS FRUSTRATED. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION AS TO WHETHER SHE SHOULD GO NOW OR WAIT?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
She is already diabetic and aged 83 years old so I would advise her to immediately go to Emergency room to avoid excess blood loss and any adverse health effect.

Bleeding in stool is matter of concern and it warrants detailed evaluation to find out the underlying cause which could be related to gastrointestinal disease or bleeding disorder.

Meanwhile ask her to have plenty of fluids including ORS and lemon water to counter dehydration and electrolytic imbalances.
Hope this answers your question
Best wishes
