I accidentally took a mouthful of calamine lotion instead of Gavisgon, I had sickness and diahria, but I also had chest pains and was very ill. I seem to have recovered now, but are there any lasting affects? The calamine was 11years passed its use by date. Thank you

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Calamine lotion is used externally on the skin to treat mild itchiness from insect bites, sunburn etcetera. It contains zinc compound (zinc oxide) with or without iron (ferric oxide) compounds.
Zinc is one of the essential trace elements in the body. When digested, zinc in high doses may cause acute toxicity symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Consuming a one-time high dose does not have long-term side effects. Also, zinc does not have a potential to cause cancer in the human body.
If you have recovered from acute zinc toxicity, then you will not have long lasting side effects.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Malik Amonov
