Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
good day Doc, I hope your day is going well? I have a baby boy who will turn 7months on the 25th of October, I think he has a stomach upset kind of like a diarrhoea, he has been pooing (watery/ unformed ) frequently since yesterday. I was told to give him Metronidazole and together with zinc Sulphate. I will appreciate your advise on this and how safe this combination is. Thank you in anticipation of your quick response.
Diarrhea in infants is common and mostly caused by a stomach virus and settle itself in a few days. It most of the times does not need any treatment besides giving more fluids to avoid dehydration.
Zinc Syp is quite often given to children with loose motions and has many benefits so it's good to be given. Regarding Flagyl, while it's mostly safe to be given but may not be needed until diarrhea is caused by amoeba or Giardia rather than the virus. We don't recommend it in such cases though it's safe many times.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
