Suggest Treatment For Difficult Catheterization Due To Enlarged Prostate
I am a Spinal Cord injury patient, and recently started having trouble doing intermittent catherizations. I have been told in the past that I have an enlarged Prostrate and trying to cath, I am having troble getting the catherter pass the blockage. But, I am able to urinate involuntarily into a Depends. What should I do?
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. If you do not have excessive urine post void volume, you need not go for internal catheterization. You can use a condom catheter. 2. If you need to get the catheter into get into bladder, due to prostate pressing on the urethra, you can get urethral injury and infection risk. 3. You can use duasteride to avoid further increase in size of prostate. Alpha blockers can be also useful to relax the urethra and easy urine flow. Condom catheter can be tried in the meanwhile. Avoid urinary tract infection due to catheterization injury or increase post-void urine. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
