Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Sleeping

Hi, I ve spoken to many doctors and family about my sleeping problem but I can t find the answer I need. I ve been using cannabis as a form of medication to help me sleep and it works PERFECTLY every time, but I know that I can t keep this up. I ve been subscribed Zopiclone and haven t taken any yet because I m very sceptical. For a year maybe just over, whenever I put my head to the pillow at night, random songs, thoughts, emotions, equations - basically anything you can think of - come into my head and simply do not leave! I love using cannabis because it s medication and a good feeling but because I ve became dependant (NOT addicted!) I have trouble seeing a better solution. I really really need help with this one! I m not a lazy guy, I m quite active during the day and have a fluxuating eating problem (which the cannabis sometimes helps) and I just need either a tablet, a drink, anything that will knock me out at night but won t cause harm to my liver.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

I understand that you have been suffering from early insomnia (difficulty in initiating sleep) for a long time. Seroquel (Quetiapine) is an anti-psychotic medication which has sedative properties and if sometimes used in the short-term management of insomnia. Unfortunately, you have been experiencing multiple side effects of that medication.

Now, there are several other medication which can be used to treat insomnia. Benzodiazepines are one such group, but the problem with this group of medication is the high risk for dependence.

One good alternative, especially for initial / early insomnia is Zolpidem. This is very effective in people who have trouble falling asleep. It is a relatively safe medication and unlike benzodiazepines, there is no risk for dependence.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
