Suggest Treatment For Difficulty In Stretching Or Folding The Arms

My arms, from just below my elbows down, as well as my hands have had the sensation of being asleep for about a week or more now. When I try to stretch them (specifically my hands) it becomes quite painful. For the first 2-3 days it was only my left hand (I m right handed) but now it is both arms & hands. I have very limited strength & it is very difficult to close my hands. I have had surgery on my right shoulder some years ago for a torn labrum & shoulder capsule & have had quite a few problems since then including osteoarthritis & currently need a full shoulder replacement. However, nothing like this has ever happened. I made a doctors apt but cannot get in until next week. My family & most I consult about this advise me to go to the local emergency room but I would rather not take up valuable time from staff there if at all possible. I am appreciative for any & all help or advice & I thank you for your time. Ryan

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my surgical experience, the difficulty in stretching or folding arms indicate possible nerve compression or other issue at rotator cuff of shoulder most likely. As there is past history of the surgery over the right shoulder, it is pretty well co related cause of concern.

I would suggest following at this time:
- Analgesic intake as acetaminophen or diclofenac after prescription from your primary care
- Gradual rotating movements (not beyond pain threshold)
- Heating pad application over the shoulder area
- Avoid weight lifting (if applicable)

Wait for a period of one week till you meet your Orthopedic specialist for further expertise care and management.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
