Suggest Treatment For Difficulty Walking And Swelling In Knee

Hi I slipped on some stairs last Friday night but caught myself before I fell down them. It still hurts so bad I m having trouble walking, even laying in bed. It s not swollen, just painful on the inside of the knee. I guess I want to know if I should go get an MRI or X-ray... I don t have insurance so I d rather not if I don t have to. Thank you!

Hello,

You are having difficulty walking after a fall due to pain in the inner side of the knee. It can be caused by a pulled or strained muscle, internal injury, blood clot in the thigh, a hernia, osteoarthritis, etc. You are suggested to get it clinically examined by a Physical therapist. Get X-ray, MRI done to rule out any internal injury, ligament/ tendon tear, blood clot, etc.

Presently, give rest to your affected knee, do not put weight on it while going to washroom, etc. Take the help of a walking stick or crutch. Applying ice and compression wrap may help. Keep your foot elevated on a stool when you are sitting and on a pillow when on bed. If fracture or dislocation is detected you will be accordingly treated. In case there is no fracture, you may need crepe bandage and rest for any type of tissue damage and bruising on the inner thigh.

You will have severe pain and loss of strength in your leg if the leg muscle is completely torn. It will be healed with rest. You can consult an orthopedist. Strength will come with time and exercises done under a Physical therapist. You can take NSAIDS, after food to get rid of pain. You can apply pain relieving sprays and also. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
