Hi,
Complex net work of nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments allow the knuckles to move and giving rise to precise finger movements. The pain in a particular movement of finger depends on the specific
soft tissue involved. In more severe cases, the
fracture of bone or dislocation of knuckle joint, may also give rise to pain.
Normally rest to the injured area by immobilization of affected part till the injured tissue heals, application of ice at the swollen area to reduce swelling and pain, keeping the finger raised above heart level to reduce the swelling, Compressing with a bandage or buddy tape to reduce the swelling and sometimes immobilizing the knuckle in a brace or
splint. Use of OTC analgesics or anti-inflammatory like
Tylenol or
Advil etc. may give relief from pain and swelling.
Usually, the symptoms will go in a short period by these simple
home remedies. However, if the symptoms do not subside or become more intense, then, you are advised to see your doctor for further management, as there may be possibility of fracture / dislocation of bone or joint and there may also be a need of X-ray etc. for proper diagnosis and treatment accordingly.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
