Suggest Treatment For Discomfort On Neck That Radiates To The Jaws

For a least two months, I've had discomfort on the left side, back of my neck that radiates into my jaw, just under my tongue. In speculating, I think it may be my salivary glands or eustacian tubes. I also feel it in my ear. My PCP suggested a neck x-ray. Will that really tell me anything?

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.
Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention in query are typical symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder . There can be many reasons for TMJ disorder but the clenching of teeth (bruxism) at night and stress suppose to be very common factor . There are other factors too like arthritis of joint . high point in dental filling or high point in cusp of crown.

I would suggest you to consult oral surgeon for proper diagnosis and to rule out other condition like sub-mandibular gland infection.

Doctor may give you mouth guard , muscle relaxant , give instruction to bite correctly . anti depressant or multivitamin supplement. Try to keep your stress level low (if there is stress ) .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
