General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The enlarged abdomen can be due to:

(1) Enlargement of an organ in the abdomen or pelvis

(2) Liver or kidney disease or heart disease- these can cause a build-up of fluid in the body

(3) Low protein levels- this can also lead to fluid build-up as well

(4) The build-up of fat.

If the ultrasound was only of the abdomen, then a pelvic U/S should be considered if you are female (to check the size of the uterus).

Blood tests can check protein levels and an echo can check the heart (if there are other heart-related symptoms).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
