Suggest Treatment For Dizziness, Severe Headaches And Unsteady Gait

My mother-in law is 89 & each doctor says she s in good health. She takes carvedilol & amlodipine. Her problem is she has had a dizzy issue for about 10 years since she fell in the bathroom and hit her head. Now she has a severe headache at times on the left side and is very unsteady when she walks. This gets worse when she goes outside. I have had her to neurologists (they told her it was her inner ear but the exercises they did with her didn t work) & she had MRI recently (came back good) and no one can seem to tell her what is wrong. I was wondering if she could have water on the brain. I have had her to many doctors in the past but I don t know where I should take her now. Her symptoms are she s extremely unsteady, severe headache, and she can t seem to focus on task at hand. She s always been a sharp lady but is not now. Can you help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your mother in law is suffering from dizziness, severe headache and unsteady gait. She has the dizzy issue since 10yrs after she fell in the bathroom. Dizziness associated with severe headache & unsteady gait is commonly caused due to inner ear problem, vertigo, peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord issues, weakness, arthritis, MS, spinal cord compression, etc. You are suggested to get her clinically examined by an ENT, get audiometry test, hearing tests, vision tests including eye movement to detect vertigo.

The ENT may refer her to a Neurologist, get CT/MRI, Nerve conduction velocity test and electromyogram done. Electromyogram helps to evaluate for muscle problems and peripheral neuropathy. She will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, you can get her connected to a Physical therapist so that the exercises and massage therapy can continue, it is effective. To reduce headache she can take acetaminophen, one SOS when needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
