Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was bit two days ago by a pitbull. The skin was barely broken and only two small marks were made. I was bit on the outside of my right leg just above my knee. The bite swelled immediately and bruised within an hour. The wound itself is still sore, but my calf developed soreness and stiffness during the night. I can barely straighten my leg without severe pain in my lower calf just above my Achilles. Movement loosens it up slightly but the pain is consistent and very brutal when stationary and the area is very sore to the touch. Is this sign of infection? Should I be worried about damaged tendons?
You seem to have got infected at the wound site. You need to have anti-rabies vaccination, Rabies Post exposure Immunization. In Unimmunized individuals, 1 mL IM x5 doses. Administer on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 in conjunction with administration of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) on day 0
HRIG: 20 IU/kg; if anatomically feasible, the full dose should be infiltrated around and into the wound(s), and any remaining volume should be administered IM at an anatomical site distant from vaccine administration.
Pain in the calf and the entire leg suggests a cellulitis or fasciitis. Please do consult a physician as soon as possible to start the dose of antibiotics for cellulitis and sepsis.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
