Thank you for asking Healthcare majic.
My name is Dr Ehsan Ullah &
I have gone through your query.
you have mentioned that you had
Rabies vaccine on 20th and at 22nd after consulting another Physician , you had immunoglobulin shot.
Your main worry or concern is that
you have been told by some Nurse that it should be taken before 24 hours of bite.
Rabies immunoglobulin can be given by two ways;
preferably
it should be given concomitantly with the Vaccine .
but
it Can be given thru 7th day after first dose of vaccine.
and it's not mandatory to use immunoglobulin in every patient who had dog bite....
World health organization (WHO) recommends its use in Category III patients only.
here is the statement of WHO
"Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) should be given for all category III exposures, irrespective of the interval between exposure and beginning of treatment"
The indication for post-exposure
vaccination with or without rabies immune globulin depends on the type of contact with the rabid animal.
Types of contact are:
category I – touching or feeding animals, licks on the skin...it needs No treatment
category II - nibbling of uncovered skin, minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding, licks on broken skin ( Needs Rabies Vaccination)
category III – single or multiple transdermal bites or scratches, contamination of
mucous membrane with saliva from licks; exposure to bat bites or scratches (Vaccination and Immunoglobulin)
Hope this may help you. Kindly write a review & Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
