Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had lupus since 1986 and for the last year have been experiencing dry mouth (I m using Biotene at bedtime), and also have dryness of the eyes to the extent that when I wake up I have to pry open my eye; I use Systane daily, Systane night treatment and Visine for redness, and TheraTears; seems to be more of a problem during the night. Seems to be better using systane. I see a rheumatologist 2 times a year, and an opthamologist (I m seeing him for the first time tomorrow; but have been seeing an eye dr once a year, who really didn t address the issue. Should I continue using what I am now; interested in hearing what the eye dr, says tomorrow. Thanks.
Yes, you can continue to use Systane Ultra drops & Visine eye drops. Since you have a history of Lupus & RA & now you have symptoms of dry mouth & dryness in the eyes, you may have Sjogren's syndrome.
You are suggested to get physically examined & assessed. Your treating Ophthalmologist & GP will treat you with artificial tears & medicines like Lacrisert or Restasis for the eyes & Cevimeline for the dryness of mouth.
Take medicines always under your treating doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
