Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi my sugar level for the past two months is either 6.4-7.4 with fasting and can reach to 12.4 - 14 after eating, my question is do I have to take maintenance with these numbers or diet is still an option. I don t really like to take medication due to its side effects. Thank you
your glucosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels will clarify this issue. Your high glucose excursions are against your plan though. If your glucosylated hemoglobin is significantly elevated (higher than 6.5% or even worse higher than 7.0%) then drug treatment would probably be necessary. If you're obese or overweight you may hope that with significant weight loss (more than 7% of your current body weight) and daily physical activity your blood sugar control may improve. Otherwise, your chances to avoid taking antidiabetic drugs are not high.
I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Kind Regards, Dr Panagiotis Zografakis, Internal Medicine Specialist
