As our district school psychologist, I have been requested to attend a 504 Student Plan meeting regarding a 7th grade male student with encopresis. Unfortunately, his current 504 Student Plan is not proving to be effective. The child soils his pants almost every day at school. His 504 Plan accommodations at present include scheduled toilet ing breaks & the right to a bathroom pass whenever he asks. A private bathroom, wiping, & change of clothing are provided to him. However, this student seems completely unaware & unbothered when he has accidents. Refuses to go to private school bathroom to clean himself & change into clean clothes. Classmates are responding by complaining of odor as well as ignoring/shunning him - the student sits by himself at lunch in the cafeteria. The other students have not started name-calling, etc. - but they do greatly withdraw/ignore from him. Can our school system require the student to clean himself & change into a diapering pull-up? What are the health dangers involved to both the student AND fellow classmates? This poor student literally smells like a sewer. Desks, school benchs, & school toilets - on all, he leaves a fecal residue that has seeped through from pants. Suggestions? I m very concerned for the student as well as the health safety of his classmates. What risks exist for the student &/or fellow students & teachers? Worried about hepatitis - or is that being foolish? Thank you! F
