Suggest Treatment For Episcleritis

My nephew has Wegners and has a flare up in his eyes. The ear, nose and throat specialist says he has episcleritis. It was recommended that he start taking methotrexate to control the flare up. However, he is currently taking Bactrum and I ve read this shouldn t be taken with methotrexate. Is this true? If so, what other antibiotic can be taken with methotrexate or is there something other than methotrexate he can take with Bactrum?

Hi,

Episcleritis often goes away on its own. If the appearance bothers you, or it keeps coming back, you can talk to your doctor about different treatment options. He needs to take methotrexate. Apart from that the following treatment has to be taken.

These include:
1. Corticosteroid eye drops
2. Artificial tear eye drops
3. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
4. Treating an underlying inflammatory condition

While you wait for your episcleritis to clear up, there are a few things you can do to manage its symptoms, such as:
1. Applying a cool compress over your eyes with your eyes closed
2. Applying artificial tear eye drops
3. Wearing sunglasses outside

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr Sanjay Kini, General & Family Physician
