Suggest Treatment For Exhaustion And Difficulty Sleeping

I m a47 yo Caucasian female. Almost 2 yrs ago my dr noticed I had a goiter. She sent me for an ultrasound which showed several nodules as well as the goiter on my thyroid. I was also diagnosed with Hashimoto s. I had a fine needle aspiration which was fine. She started me on Synthroid and I went back 6 mos later for a follow up ultrasound. This time it showed additional nodules, so many that they couldn t tell which ones they originally biopsied. My dr and I made the decision to remove my thyroid in August 2014. I m having a very difficult time trying to feel normal again. I m achy, especially hips, hands & fingers, my memory is horrible (which is very frustrating for my husband), I feel exhausted but have difficulty sleeping. I feel like such a mess all the time. Is there anything else I can do or discuss with my dr to try to feel more like my old self?

Hi,

From what you describe the surgery you had was necessary. But obviously the hormone replacement therapy is still not optimal. I don’t doubt the competence of your local doctor, but you should definitely see an endocrinologist. In case you are already seeing one, get a second opinion from another endocrinologist.

I can promise you that you can return to your old self, yes. It’s possible and should be the therapeutic goal. Especially with hormones we as physicians must always remember that lab results are not always equal to an optimal therapy. We must treat you, not your lab results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
