Suggest Treatment For Extreme Fatigue And Weight Gain While Having Hypothyroidism

I am a 55 yr old female. I have been treated for hypothyroidism for 27 years. In the last year I began experiencing extreme fatigue, lack of interest, weight gain etc. I thought I was having heart issues so I saw my cardiologist for a stress test, blood work etc. My heart checked out fine but to my and my Dr s surprise my thyroid level was .01. My internal med dr decreased my dose and checked it at 8 weeks - it was .05. He decreased it again, checked at 8 weeks and it was 1.4. I am due for my next check Oct 1st. I am still symptomatic but do feel some improvement with the most current dose change. My question is, for the last 5 wks I have had discomfort and stiffness on the left side of my neck. It is consistent and has not changed in 5 weeks so I don t think is it simply a sore muscle as I first thought as it should have improved by now. Do you think it could be connected to my low thyroid? I don t feel any lumps or sore spots - just general stiffness and discomfort. My Internal med Dr also said if my level hasn t improved soon I may have jumped to hyperthyroidism, I would like your thoughts on that as well please. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of hypothyroidism. At present you are having discomfort & stiffness in the neck.

Hypothyroidism has a tendency to cause fatigue, muscle cramps, stiffness in the neck, shoulders or hip. Maintain low BMI, exercise regularly so that the symptoms don't get worse.

Stay away from spicy oily food, trans fat, red meat, cheese(paneer), etc. Take berries, fruits & veggies, whole grain & homemade food.

Neck pain or discomfort may be due to inflammation of the thyroid. It may be due to infection in the lymph glands or an enlarged thyroid nodule.

You are suggested to get physically examined, get Imaging (X-Ray, CT, MRI) done to detect the cause of your discomfort & get treated at the earliest.

Neglect may lead to worsening of symptoms & complications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
