Suggest Treatment For Extreme Side Effects Post Intake Of Prozac For Depression

Hi, my name is Ashleigh, my sister and I are racking our minds on how to help my niece, her daughter, to get a better idea of what s going on with her... She is 13yrs old, and has recently been diagnosed with traumatic stress disorder, depression, and generalized anxiety. Her therapist and Dr have agreed to have her placed on Prozac 10mg a day. Which she started 3 weeks ago. (also I feel knowledge of her being IGG4 deficient may help) since starting the Prozac she has made several trips to the ER for numerous on going symptoms included but not limited to severe (almost never ending) headaches causing loss of vision in left eye along with pain behind that eye. These headaches also make her dizzy, light headed, and weak feeling. She has also fainted and fallen into walls or to the floor. She s had random nose bleeds. More frequent anxiety attacks, along with increased heart rate, shortness of breath, and shakes. Also she has random uncontrollable twitches thru out her full body which she never experienced before. U of M Motts Children s hospital acknowledged the symptoms and did do an EKG, blood work, and urine samples. We were told every thing returned normal. Upon another trip to a Beaumont hospital ER she was sent home with a diagnosis of unspecified headaches This is an every day struggle at this point... Any advice, or piece of mind would be very much appreciated. Thank you Ashleigh S

Hi,

* Prozac contains Fluoxetine , an anti depressant of SSRI ( selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) group used in various depression conditions.

However, there are severe side effects of the drug as

- headache of varying intensity
- palpitation
- chest pain
- insomnia
- agitation
- diarrhea
- vivid dreams
- anxiety
- panic attacks
- visual disturbances
- suicidal thoughts
- others

As your niece is suffering from severe forms of side effects of the drug, I would recommend to stop the further dose intake of Prozac.

Her mother must report the issue to her doc and fix an appointment on priority basis for getting prescription of alternative anti depressant as tricyclic antidepressant or others with better side effect profile for her safety and recovery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
