Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My tooth broke off at the root about a month ago and no problems until my wife accidentally headbutted in my mouth 2 days ago woke up the following day with extreme swelling in the face. Also have had chemo treatment and radiation therapy due to sinus cancer 9 years ago which weakened my jaw, and facial bones. What can I do until I get in at the dentist?
I can understand your concern. The swelling could be due to infection from the broken tooth or due to a fractured jaw bone during the injury.
I would advise you not to gargle with hot water as the infection may worsen if the swelling is due to infection. In addition, do not use hot compressions to the area. You can do ice application to reduce the amount of swelling if it is due to fractured bone. In addition, you can take Ibuprofen 400 mg or Ketorolac 10 mg up to thrice a day for relief in pain.
I would advise you to visit a dentist as soon as possible as clinical examination and x-ray of the area are necessary. If infection of the tooth is the cause, extraction of it is needed. In case of fracture of the weakened bone, oral & maxillofacial surgeon should be consulted for treatment options.
I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
