Suggest Treatment For Eye Floaters

hi, I am very near sighted, am over 50 years old and have had eye floaters for as long as i can remember. However, presently, I have a rather large one that has been there for three days now. I CANT STAND IT! I went to the eye doctor within 24 hours of first noticing it, and the doctor said everything looks great, and more or less I just need to get used to it. I was wondering if i patched it, would that be a good idea.

Hi,

Floaters are spots I vision that look like black or grey dots or strings that drift in field of vision. They are not related to underlying disease, any a times disappear automatically or person gets used to it. No treatment is needed in normal course, except on cases of sudden blindness (retinal detachment) and needs to be attended to urgently. Be in touch of ophthalmologist, keep the refractory error corrected, avoid drying -excessive rubbing of eyes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Saurabh Mittal's  Response
Hi,

Eye Floaters are a common identity normally develops in old age and commonly seen in myopic eyes. These are due to degenerative changes happening in the vitreous and retina. These leads to separation of liquid component of the vitreous from the solid components. the solid join together and produces shadows on the retina when light enters your eyes.

They can develop due to retinal disease. A detailed retina checkup is required to look for retinal disease esp by a retina specialist. In case your previous eye checkup is not done by retina specialist then I suggest you to meet one of them. No treatment is required if vitreous is affected. But definite treatment is required if retina is involved. This will help in further worsening of disease. You can take antioxidants and use NSAID eye drops to decrease inflammation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saurabh Mittal, Ophthalmologist
