my granddaughter developed an eye infection shortly after birth and was treated with erythromycin eye ointment for a ten day regiment-eye infection is now in both eyes and we can t seem to get rid of it- her doctor says not to use the ointment anymore- is there anything over the counter we can try-she is 11 weeks old today and weighs about 13 pounds?
Hi, I am Dr. Richa. Infection/ continuous watering in a new born can be caused by blockage of tube which takes tears from eyes to nose. In most of the cases ( around 85%) blockage can be resolved with regular massage. Massage can be done by applying pressure over the nasal corner of eyes by a finger and moving finger along the nose downward towards the angle of nose. This pressure should be applied every time baby is fed, about 10 strokes every time. Make sure your nails are trimmed. In 85% of cases, this tube opens by massage in 85% of cases. If you notice any other thing or the eyes are severely red please contact an ophthalmologist. Take care
